Berlin 46 Outpost Lodge 895

Berlin 46 Outpost Lodge (The Berlin Lodge) is an international English speaking Masonic Lodge located in Berlin Germany. Our present local members include expatriates from the US, Canada, Scotland, Ireland, England, India, and English speaking Germans.

We have members from business, finance, musicians, artists,

teachers, diplomats, among others, who share their wonder and enjoyment of this ancient institution. Berlin 46 Outpost Lodge 895 arose out of the fusion of two American military Lodges.

After the WWII, US military Masons in Berlin began meeting regularly early in 1946. In remembrance of how our German Brothers and Lodges suffered under the Nazis, it became a mission for them to bring "Masonic Light" back into the city. The Berlin Lodge was founded in the American sector of Berlin in 1947 under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island. The emblem of the Lodge was the same as the city the Brothers protected ‐ the bear.

The Lodge was only the third to open in Germany after the war, so it proudly bore the name "Berlin Lodge". The number "46" was the chronological number assigned the Lodge in the roster of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island. Over the years, the Berlin Lodge supported the founding of several other German Masonic Lodges and often through their "four powers" status

supported our German Brothers and Lodges during those difficult times. As the Lodge changed jurisdiction, the name became "Berlin 46" to commemorate the history of the Lodge. Outpost Lodge was founded by a group of Sojourning Masons in Berlin, who applied for and received a charter from the United Grand Lodges of Germany in 1965. The name Outpost was chosen, as the US military were considered stationed at an outpost and at the "forefront" of the cold war in the walled city of Berlin. The emblem of the Lodge was the outline of the city's boarders denoting the 4 military sectors with a Masonic emblem in the

center to signify the Lodge. This emblem has been adapted to become the emblem of the united Berlin 46 Outpost Lodge.

In those years, US soldiers were stationed in Berlin on average 6-9 months. As most military Lodges, we passed candidates through the degrees quicker than the civilian Lodges because of the rotation of soldiers. As a result, we have a large membership with most living in US states and other countries. The American Canadian "Provincial" Grand Lodge was founded, within the United Grand Lodges of Germany, in 1962 as the Masonic Grand Body for the American and Canadian Military Lodges located in Germany and both

Berlin American Military Lodges joined. With the reunification of Germany in 1991, the American and Canadian forces were greatly reduced and all allied bases were closed in Berlin by 1994. With the draw‐down, Berlin 46 and Outpost Lodge united as Berlin 46 Outpost Lodge carrying the number 895 from Outpost Lodge. The name combines and memorializes the proud histories of both of these Masonic Lodges.

Looking into the future, the Berlin Lodge has become an international English‐language Lodge for men of all walks of life. As a regular and internationally accept Lodge, it enjoys relationships with millions of Brothers and thousands of Lodges in most every country. And, as all accepted Lodges, it is a repository of an ancient initiation ritual system dating back to at least 1390.
